AKT researchers in the University of Southampton are located in the Intelligence, Agents, Multimedia Group in the Department of Electronics and Computer Science - recently awarded a 5* in the 2001 RAE exercise. The AKT group is built around Professor Nigel Shadbolt, the project director,
and works across the full range of AKT challenges. Senior researchers include
Professor Wendy Hall, Hugh Glaser, Les Carr, Professor David de Roure and Kieron
O'Hara. These researchers bring expertise to the AKT project on a number of
relevant technologies, including:
IAM's specific contributions to AKT include work on the construction of ontologies, annotation of objects, structures and documents, open hypermedia, knowledge quality and maintenance issues (including valuation, forgetting, and ontology curation), and software and methods for identifying communities of practice. Dr O'Hara's recent book Plato and the Internet (Icon Books) gives an introductory
account of knowledge management issues, placing them in their historical context
and showing how AKT is addressing them. Professor Shadbolt is a co-author of
Knowledge Engineering and Management (MIT/AAAI Press), an integrated and exhaustive
manual for the application of knowledge engineering methods to knowledge management
problems.
