AktiveDoc: AktiveDoc is a tool for supporting knowledge management in the process of document editing and reading. Its main goal is to support users (both readers and writers) in timely sharing and reusing relevant knowledge. AktiveDoc fact-file
What's the Problem?Document annotation is one of the main method of knowledge acquisition. Annotations can span from tagging portions of documents with concept labels, to identifying instances or concept mentions, to connect sparse information (e.g. a telephone number and its owner. Other annotations can be composed at reading time, i.e. when the document is displayed The many times a document can be annotated and the many pieces of knowledge potentially connected can easily transform a Semantic Web document into an intricate set of connections. Towards a SolutionAktiveDoc supports three different kinds of document annotation: • Ontology-driven annotations identifying ontological instances in the document. Annotations can be added in a manual or in a semi-automatic way, using Information Extraction processes applied on the document itself; possible ontology-based annotations are identified automatically and proposed to the user. If accepted, they become part of the enriched document. • Free text annotations (or comments) can be inserted to add contextual knowledge not explicitly mentioned within the content (often referred to as braindump ). • Knowledge suggestions – existing annotations can be connected to knowledge bases and ontologies. So already produced content can be proposed for inclusion in a document In particular, document content and existing annotations are considered in the context of the user's previous knowledge and further annotations and content are suggested for insertion. Proposals are gathered from different sources, i.e., from the Web or other external repositories. Examples of tasks covered here are use of a search engine or of a SW harvester (e.g. Armadillo), or image retrieval. AKTiveDoc saves comments and annotations in separate databases allowing levels of security and privacy; they can be (1) public, (2) private or (3) confidential: only the comments and annotations for which the user has permission are actually displayed. The interface consists of a main editing window with several toolbars of formatting options; the ontology on the left side panel; a set of lower frames that visualise system suggestions, contributions and proposed annotations. AktiveDoc's architecture is composable so that it can accommodate different user scenarios. |
