Semantic Annotation with MnM Technology: Description of intro-image What's the Problem? * How do you get semantic content into the semantic web? * How do you integrate manual, semi-automatic, and automatic semantic markup processes? Towards a solution MnM is a semantic annotation tool which provides manual, automated and semi-automated support for annotating web pages with \x{2018}semantics\x{2019}, i.e., machine interpretable descriptions. MnM provides knowledge acquisition forms to allow a user to mark up web resources by instantiating generic concepts from a standardized terminology (an ontology) for a particular domain. It allows the user the facility to choose ontologies from a variety of sources. All of this can be achieved in a familiar web browser environment. In order to automate the semantic annotation process MnM has a plug-in mechanism which provides access to information extraction systems, such as Amilcare. Thus MnM reduces the effort required to annotate large web resources. The image below shows an example of using MnM to populate the AKT reference ontology. In the picture the home page of Enrico Motta has been marked up with slots from the class kmi-senior-research-fellow. This mark up can be used to directly modify instance enrico-motta, or as the basis for developing information extraction mechanisms.
