MyPlanet fact-file
What's the Problem?Every organisation has its own internal news letter. Many of these exist online. Although they provide a useful service there are a number of existing problems. From the reader's perspective only a subset of the stories will be of interest - finding the interesting stories is non-trivial. On the other hand editors have to tradeoff completeness (ensuring that all potentially interesting stories are published) with grabbing and holding the reader's attention.Towards a SolutionMyPlanet allows users to create their own personalised version of a web based newsletter by creating a profile based on an ontology. Figures 1a-c below show a user creating a personal view of the KMi Planet newsletter (from the Knowledge Media Institute (KMi)) through a populated ontology which describes KMi.In figure 1a the user selects the KMi Lecturer Martyn Cooper and adds him to a personal MyPlanet profile. In figure 1b the user has selected "View MyPlanet" (in figure 1a) and the system has created a personal version of the KMi Planet newsletter showing only stories related to Martyn Cooper. In figure 1c the user is viewing the story "£10,000 for Transformation of Language Course". MyPlanet works by associating items within a populated ontology with cue phrases. The story in figure 1c was associated with Martyn Cooper because the cue phrase "visually impaired students" is linked to Martyn Cooper's projects on supporting students with visual impairment.
